DIY: RCA Cable
- You will need some basic materials for creating your cable, including an electric soldering iron, basic wire strippers, a crimping tool, solder, RCA ends and cable. Often the stripper and crimping tool will be combined in one multi-use tool that works for several different types of wires and connectors.
- Pull the RCA pin apart and find the positive and ground connector points. The ground will be the lower one. Next, strip cable back half and inch select which wire will be your hot lead and which will be your ground. You must be sure that the wire you use for your hot lead and your ground is consistent on both sides of the cable. Trim the ground wire to be slightly shorter than the hot. This can be measured by holding the wire up to the RCA end. Now, strip just enough of the actual wire to solder. Once this is done, slide the outside sleeve of the RCA end onto the cable first, and then the inside sleeve.
At this point you are prepared to begin constructing the cable. Tin the tip of the soldering iron, ends of the wire and the connections on the RCA end. Once tinned, you can solder the wires to the positive and ground connectors on the RCA end. Do not apply the solder to the soldering iron, apply it to the wire and let the wire heat up enough to melt it. Also, be careful not to melt the white plastic on the RCA end.
Once the wires are on and the solder is dry, crimp the end of the connector onto the cable. Then slide the inside sleeve and tighten it around the cable with your crimping tool. Lastly, slide the outside sleeve up and thread it on to the connector
