There is quite a bit that goes into designing and optimizing your Google places page as of late that when done right you will pull down the rewards for a long, long period of time. If you are on page one now of your local Search and are not optimized, the fact is you can start slipping down off that prime real estate that Google is now blessing you with.

Optimizing your Google places page is simple when you know precisely what you are doing, there are a few main steps you can take to augment your online visibility. The first thing you need is to be sure you do is claim your Google places page!

To begin deploy your browser to Google's main page and just search for yourself. When you identify your places page select the small blue that says Place page. This will carry you into the page area itself where your details are. At the top but below the search box you will see two links, one says edit the other will either say Owner Verified with a green check mark or it will say Business owner? with a question mark next to it. If it is yours you best verify it before anyone else does for you.

If you don't have a Google account you will need to set one up, Gmail is the most common way. Be sure to follow Google Places Review Guidelines

That is the main step. After that be sure your business name is as you listed it on your business license, Google is cracking down. Stuffing keywords into the business name section is may get you removed.

Next fill in the fields they ask for. There are a lot of new changes being made by Google as far as how your places page should be designed. With recent changes in Jan & Feb 2011 if you do not do things properly you may be seeing yourself in the top 7 box.

Categories are next for basic set up, just keep these with the ones that Google recommends. The main thing here is do not try to stuff extra words in to make it look better. Your Google places page is a great asset to you if improperly formatted it could take real work to get back to where Google sees sees you as following the rules again.
