The X Games is an annual sporting event organized by ESPN. The X Games focuses on "extreme" sporting events and holds both summer and winter competitions, always in the United States. The first X Games was held in Rhode Island in the summer of 1995. The summer X Games are usually held in August and are known for being a forum for the introduction of new tricks, such as Tony Hawk's 900 in skateboarding or Anthony Napolitan's first-ever double front flip on a bike. - Men's skateboarding is one of the biggest draws at the summer X Games. Skateboarding events include vert (or halfpipe), street, big air, big trick and superpark, although they often vary slightly from year to year. In vert and street, skaters do as many tricks as they can in the allotted amount of time, which is a few minutes. In big air, competitors are focused on making large jumps, and in big trick it's all about doing one spectacular trick. Superpark is a combination of all the events and highlights a skater's overall skill. All events are scored by judges.
- Men's Freestyle BMX is another main event at the summer X Games and features the same events as men's skateboarding: vert (or halfpipe), street, big air, big trick and superpark. These also can vary slightly from year to year.
- Moto-X, or motocross, is a form of motorcycle racing held in closed-off circuits. Moto-X events at the summer X Games include freestyle, best trick, step up and men's and women's supercross. In the freestyle and trick events, racers compete against one another for the highest scores for tricks and jumps. Supercross is contested on a dirt track that features jumps, with the objective being to cross the finish line first.
- The summer X Games features both men's and women's rallying, or rally car racing. Rallying is a type of auto racing that takes place on public or private roads with modified or specially built road-legal cars.
- Many X Games events have come and gone over the years, including the summer events of bungee jumping, sky-surfing, in-line skating, sport climbing, street luge, mountain biking, surfing and wakeboarding.
