How to Buy Diamond Jewelry in Thailand

    • 1). Understand what a high quality diamond is and know what to look for. Cut, clarity, color, and carat all effect the quality and price of a stone. For instance, a yellow diamond is less valuable than a clear one. A diamond with lots of flaws is obviously less valuable than one that doesn't have any kind of bubbles. Make sure you know the value of any diamond before you purchase it.

    • 2). Look around at all the jewelry stores in the city you're staying in before making a decision. Get a feel for the price of the jewelry and the types of diamonds available.

    • 3). Know the store's return policy before making your purchase. Most stores don't have a return policy and many of those that do will still retain about 25% of the purchase price. Only a few select stores will offer a full refund within the first thirty days of purchase. Some stores claim that the purchase can be refunded through a Thai embassy, consulate or other government agency, but it's a scam. Only purchase if you are completely sure that you want it.

    • 4). Make sure you your jewelry tested prior to purchase. Thailand has many jewelry stores, but many of the diamonds are fake, and scams are very common. Don't take something just on the word of the shopkeeper–they want to make a sale. Unless you know what you're looking for and have the equipment to do it correctly, find someone who can evaluate the diamond for you.

    • 5). Barter with the jewelers. Don't be afraid to offer something lower than what the shopkeep says the diamond is worth. Not only is it smart, but it's expected. Don't overpay for a diamond because you didn't try for a lower price.
