Casper, Wyoming Law on Loud Car Stereos
- Casper City Ordinances 8.20.010 through 8.20.080 all relate to noise restrictions within the city. Ordinance 8.20.050 relates specifically to noises caused by motorized vehicles, including car stereos.
- Testing procedures for measuring car stereo sound levels are very technical and are "defined in accordance with American National Standards Institute (ANSI)" guidelines and specifications. The table inset contained in Ordinance No. 8.20.040 displays the permissible sound pressure decibels for different times of day and night for each type of zoning district (i.e., residential, business, commercial and industrial). Generally, the maximum decibel (dB) level allowed measuring from the vehicle to the edge of a roadway is limited to 80 dB.
- City Ordinance 8.20.030 exempts noise from safety signals and warning devices, from emergency vehicles during an emergency, and when a city permit has been issued permitting the noise.
- Violation of any of the noise ordinances constitutes a misdemeanor offense. The abatement provision could permit a law enforcement officer to remove and confiscate a driver's car stereo (Ordinance No. 8.20.080).
