Revelation 9 Commentary

The First Woe

The trumpets of Revelation bring sounds announcing war and the sound of important events. In Revelation 9, the fifth trumpet has sounded. It is the sound of the first woe. The term woe is to signify extreme distress. In this case, it is the judgment of God upon the people of the world who have not chosen to serve the Lord.

A star has fallen from the heavens. The star is an angel sent with the key to the bottomless pit. The bottomless pit is opened and out of it comes locust. They are not ordinary locusts as sent in the plague of Egypt. They do not eat grass, trees or any green thing. They are sent to torment men who have not received the seal of God.

The locusts are sent to torment but not to kill. Their assignment is to last 5 months. The impact that it will bring on man is as poisonous as the sting of a scorpion. So much so that men will want to die, but will not be able to. The description of the locust would imply that they could symbolically represent soldiers prepared for war lead by a king. However, with God all things are possible and they could actually be literal beings. It would not be the first strange description of a heavenly being. There are opinions that attempt to support both theories. What is definite, is that it is a judgment against men and that it is only the beginning. One woe is passed, behold another comes.

The Second Woe

Revelation 9 continues with the sound of the sixth trumpet. The second woe comes. The instructions from the throne room were to set the four angels free who were bound in the river Euphrates. The four angels had prepared for this specific year, month, day and hour. They were given orders to kill a third part of men. This would mean that one third of the remaining men that had not received Jesus were scheduled to die. The 200,000,000 man army that would carry out these orders used weapons from their mouths. They were weapons of fire, smoke and sulfur. They had tails which were able to inflict injury as well. Could these be the weapons of war as we know them today? Or could they be weapons of demonic warfare? Only time will tell.

Those that Remain

The men that were not killed after the two plagues of Revelation 9 did not repent their sins. They continued to worship devils or idols that were made with hands. Many have speculated about who, what and where of these scriptures. But whatever opinion they have, the truth of the matter is war is coming. Spiritual or natural, there is a war going on and it is a war that you want to miss.
