Depression From Lack of Light

Although it goes without saying, depression is certainly no laughing matter.
For many people, they have to deal with this illness on a regular basis, sometimes for many years.
There are other people, however, that only have to deal with it on a temporary but recurring basis.
This is the case with those people who live in parts of the world that have a lack of light during the colder winter months.
For many of these individuals, light deprivation quickly becomes a very serious problem, one that can cause very deep rooted depression.
When I was growing up as a child in Pennsylvania, USA, I had a case of the blues every winter.
It seemed that the sun would disappear for months at a time behind a gray sky and even when the sun was visible, it was too cold to be outside enjoying it.
As I grew older, the usual case of the blues began to deepen and before I knew it, I was having a full blown issue with depression during the winter months.
This was my first exposure to light deprivation and I was surprised with the number of people who shared the same problem with me.
I began to look for ways to overcome the depression that I was feeling and discovered that there were commercially available lights that would put off the same type of light that we were missing when we went without the sun during these months.
I bought one and began to sit under it for a while in the afternoons.
I soon found that my depression was starting to lift and as long as I used the lamps regularly, it would stay away.
When I was unable to sit under the lights for a time because of my busy schedule, the depression would begin to creep into my life again.
I was one of the fortunate people that was able to identify what was behind my depression and to do something to take care of it.
Many people go through their entire lives, living in a depressed state and not knowing what can be done about it.
If you find that you get the blues during the dark winter months, however, remember that this is a type of depression that can be treated.
Instead of having to live with these feelings on a regular basis, you can easily overcome them by giving your body the light that it needs.
