Design for Potting Bench
- 1). Consider the space available and determine the best dimensions for your potting bench. Decide how wide you want the bench to be and how deep. Keep in mind that if it's too deep, it will make reaching to the back of the bench difficult. Also decide your comfortable working height. That should be the height of the main counter space. Write down your dimensions.
- 2). Determine how much shelving you'd like your potting bench to have. Some have one or two additional, full- depth shelves beneath the main working space. Others have shallow shelves that rise from the back of the bench--a good place to store extra pots and seed packets. Still others use a peg board attached to the back for easy tool storage.
- 3). Use your dimensions and the number of shelves to calculate how much wood you will need to build your potting bench.
- 4). Decide if your bench will be mobile or stationary. Some potting benches are on wheels to make them easy to move across a smooth landscape.
- 5). Compare prices for materials. You want to choose a durable and attractive wood easy to seal against weather, if your bench will be outdoors. You also want one that meets your budget needs. You will also need to plan for and price hardware such as brackets and screws.
