Lawn Care: How to Water Trees
- 1). Locate the roots of the tree. The roots of large trees extend outward and not usually more than 12 inches into the ground. Water large trees with a sprinkler attachment placed in the area under the edge of the canopy. Water once or twice every week that there is no rainfall.
- 2). Water small trees and saplings with an open hose. Water once a week around the base of the tree, enough to soak the soil. Gather up soil in a circle around the tree to help retain the water.
- 3). Water trees during the evening hours or after sunset. Trees absorb the most water during the coolest part of the day, when it is less likely to evaporate.
