There is an old saying that necessity is the mother of invention. When man began to construct huge buildings, spacious warehouses, vast parking facilities and large public places, he felt the need of illuminating them very badly. It was time when simple mercury vapor lamps were being used but man was not satisfied with the light produced by them. He was thinking of innovative illumination system. As a result, nearly 64 years ago HID Lights were introduced. HID Lights is an acronym of High Intensity Discharge Lights. In HID Lights either few high wattage lamps or several low wattage lamps are used. In case of high wattage lamps consumption of electricity is reduced to favorable extent but brightness is produced to desirable level. On the other hand, low wattage lamps are used in greater numbers and that result in the uniformity of brightness.

As far as the installation of HID Lights is concerned, they can be had from any where and easily installed without having any subtle technical knowhow or dexterity. With the lapse of time a lot of changes and improvements have been made. The first form of HID Lights was Mercury Vapor. Then came Metal Halide's followed by High Pressure sodium's. As they have undergone through evolutionary steps, there are some variations in their functions and installation position too. However, all these kinds of HID Lights utilize arc tube. This arc tube is made of material which is highly heat resistant and can not be easily melted. Quartz and ceramics have high melting points so they are used in the formation of arc tube.

When dealing with HID Lights two terms are used frequently. The reason behind it is outer glass bulb which is an essential component of all kinds of HID Lights. Those which have their bulb without treated with any thing are known as clear models whereas models having their bulb coated with luminous phosphor are termed as coated ones. As far as the functionality of these HID Lights is concerned, when they are switched to work they take some time before giving full light. In case of any power interruption they do not brighten instantly on resumption of electricity but first prepare themselves to enlighten their surroundings. In addition to it, there are some possibilities of mishaps which are attributed to their use by many people. One such danger is accidental eruption of arc tube. They think that if it happens it may burst outer bulb into pieces. These hot and forceful pieces may turn into shrapnel and injure any person sitting or standing over there. They also opine that in such situation emission of intensive ultraviolet radiation may take place resulting in harmful effects. Past experience tells that no such mishap may occur if care is taken properly. Manufacturers are also thinking over this safety concern and trying to make it quite secure.

The function of HID Lights is triggered by the vaporization of gasses which are found in the fused alumina tube. When these vapors strike the heated tungsten electrode bright light is produced. In this way the whole surrounding gets enkindled. These HID Lights are being used for various purposes on different occasions at many places. Cars, motorbikes, airplanes, houses, gardens, main streets and many public places glitter with HID Lights.
