Just recently, President Obamas family dog "Bo" traveled to Maine on a private jet. He arrived safely at the Bar Harbor Airport where he was able to join The First Family on vacation. This is no surprise to the millions of pet owners who consider them to be members of the family. Today, pet friendly hotels & vacation rentals are appearing all over the U.S, enabling pets to join their owners on vacation. While pet-friendly accommodations can be easy to find, it is often transporting your pet to your destination that is the trouble. Many pet owners tend to board their furry friends or enlist a friend or family member to watch over them. Boarding your pet can be costly and sometimes pets have a difficult time adjusting to strange places without their owners or familiar surroundings. If you wish to fly with your pet using a commercial airline, the entire process can be extremely stressful to the animal. If your pet is over 20lbs., many airlines require your animal to stay inside of a crate and be placed with the luggage in cargo for the entire trip. A recent government release states that breeds with short snouts - such as bulldogs, pugs and boxers - have a very hard time flying with cargo on commercial airlines. Many cargo spaces in airplanes can reach high temperatures, which is makes it hard for these types of dogs to breathe. Over the past five years, these breeds have accounted for over half of all pet deaths on commercial airlines.

-Remember to schedule a vet appointment before you leave. It is good to make sure your pet is up to date with all of his/her shots or vaccinations.

-Let your veterinarian know about your pet's upcoming travel plans to ensure necessary precautions are taken for your pet's unique needs.

-Check your pets I.D tags to make sure they are updated & secure on their collar. A pets I.D tags are key in any event your pet is lost while on vacation. If they have a microchip, call to make sure all information is updated with the microchip company.

-Pack a few things to remind them of home. In case a pet becomes overwhelmed in a different environment, a familiar scent from home like their bed or dish bowls can help keep them at ease on vacation.

-Find out the numbers to any veterinarian offices or animal hospitals close to your vacation destination.
