Discover the New WP-Related Posts Plugin For Wordpress
Last month, Wordpress released a new plugin for its blogging community call the WP-Related Posts plugin.
While there was a previous plugin by the same name, this one comes right from Wordpress.
com and is a lot easier to implement.
Gone is the tedious chore of editing templates and getting your blog to look just right.
Getting it setup is straightforward as usual, but in the readme text there is some confusion because they tell you to edit your template.
When I did this I wound up with 2 of the same Related Posts Sections at the bottom of my posts.
So just upload the plugin to your blogs plugin directory.
Rename the directory WPRP, not sure if this is necessary but they tell you to do it in the readme.
Next, go to your Wordpress admin panel and click on plugins, if you see the Related Posts plugin there, activate it.
If its not there you did something wrong, so just re upload it and try again.
Next, go to the settings tab, and here is where you will set it all up.
First add a title for your related posts, this can be anything you choose.
Something like: Related Posts, Other Interesting Topics, Or keywords pertaining to your niche.
Next you can tell it what to do if there is no related posts.
Here you will have a few choices to make, ie.
No related posts, or add the most commented posts, or random posts.
In the next box give a title for when there is no related posts, depending on your previous choice in the box above.
The next step is to add a limit to how many posts it will show as related.
These related posts come from your tags, so if your blog is still small I would limit this to 3 or 4 related posts.
The next box has a place for you to exclude certain tags from your related posts.
It asks for tag id numbers.
If you want to exclude certain areas from related posts, go to your tag manager and when you hover over each tag you will see the id for that tag.
Use that id number to exclude those tags from related posts.
At the bottom you will see 4 check boxes.
The first box tells it to automatically add the related posts to the bottom of your main posts.
Make sure that box is checked, or no posts will show up as related, unless you edit your template.
I also checked the second box to allow rss, and its up to you whether you want to check the last 2 boxes, Display Comments Count and Display Post Date.
This is a fairly new plugin, and I had a hard time locating it even though it is posted at the Wordpress main site.
But I will leave a link to it on my blog if anyone is interested.
Have fun blogging, Jack
