Compare Go720 to Go730 GPS
- 1). Compare the map database. The Go 720 is an older model and its preloaded map database is not as extensive as the Go 730. However, you are able to automatically update the maps using the TomTom online update feature. If you do not have high speed Internet at home, or if you need to use the GPS unit right out of the box, then opt for the 730 for better preloaded maps. If you have a fast connection speed and some spare time to download map updates, either model will work fine.
- 2). Consider the 730's "IQ Routing" feature. This function uses traffic data when calculating your travel route, whereas the Go 720 primarily uses distance and posted speed limit signs to calculate the fastest route. This premium feature makes the TomTom Go 730 a preferred navigator among frequent travelers. Those who use GPS for local travel will find the 720 equally suitable.
- 3). Ignore text-to-speech, SD storage and FM transmitting. These features are offered with both the Go 720 and the Go 730. The Go 730 superseded the Go 720, but many features were carried over with little or no upgrades. Some of the Go 720's features were riddled with bugs and the Go 730 corrected these errors, according to Cnet. However, as with the map database, the Go 720's features can be patched with online upgrading.
- 4). Consider MP3 capabilities. MP3 functionality is one area where the older Go 720 is actually more capable than the newer Go 730. The TomTom Go 730 dropped MP3 capabilities, whereas the Go 720 allows you to upload songs onto your GPS. If you have a portable MP3 player, then you don't need this extra feature. For those who don't have a portable player, the Go 720 will let you take your favorite music on the road.
- 5). Evaluate unit prices carefully. The TomTom Go 720 will almost always be cheaper. If you don't need some of the additional features found on the 730, then the 720 may be a good bet. Bear in mind, the 720 model was discontinued after the TomTom Go 730 came out, so any Go 720s you buy will be refurbished models. Refurbished GPS units are low-cost, but they may stop working easily.
