How to Avoid Abbreviations at the End of a Sentence

104 27
    • 1). Rearrange your sentence if you find that it has ended with an abbreviation. This can usually be done by reordering the words. So instead of writing "She was visited by John Holmes, Esq.," you can say "John Holmes, Esq., paid her a visit."

    • 2). Spell out the entire word if you can't avoid putting the abbreviated word at the end of the sentence. For example, say "She weighed 125 pounds" rather than "She weighed 125 lb."

    • 3). Know which words to abbreviate and which not to. In formal writing you will generally stay away from abbreviations except for the most common ones, such as "Mrs.," "a.m.," "B.C.," "C.I.A." or "e.g." If you do have to use abbreviations, there is really no compelling reason for them not to appear at the end of a sentence.
