    • 1). Sharpen your lawn mower blades before mowing.

    • 2). Mow at least once a week with a mulching lawn mower.

    • 3). Cut your lawn in a diagonal pattern.

    • 4). Select a slow-release organic fertilizer that has nitrogen and iron in it.

    • 5). Fertilize your lawn just before watering.

    • 6). Water your lawn heavily only when it needs it The water should soak 6 to 8 inches into the soil whenever you water. When the soil is saturated and there is about an inch of standing water on top of the ground, stop watering. Only water early in the morning.

    • 7). Aerate your soil so that oxygen can get to the roots and to keep the soil from compacting. When you aerate your soil you put holes in it so that water, nutrients and air can get down into the dirt.
