Extracurricular Activities in the Bronx
- The Bronx, New York City's northern borough, offers numerous opportunities for outdoor and indoor extracurricular activities. Outdoor sports enthusiasts have access to the Bronx's golf courses and recreation areas, which feature walking and biking trails. Museums in the Bronx host exhibits with a variety of art and historic pieces. The spring and summer months are filled with local festivals and you can't mention the Bronx without noting that it's home to one of baseball's most storied franchises, the New York Yankees, and the new Yankee Stadium.
- The Bronx offers chances to hit the links at several golf courses, including the nine-hole Van Cortlandt Golf Course and Pelham and Split Rock Golf Course, which is the only 36-hole golf course in New York City. Van Cortland Golf Course is in northern Bronx's Van Cortlandt Park, while Pelham and Split Rock Golf Course is in the heart of Pelham Bay Park in the eastern Bronx. Both parks have a golf pro shop and the Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course has an onsite restaurant.
- The Bronx features a number of outdoor recreation areas, including the New York Botanical Gardens and the aforementioned Van Cortlandt Park and Pelham Bay Park. All these Bronx parks have paths for walking, while Van Cortlandt Park and Pelham Bay Park permit biking activities. Pelham Bay Park offers facilities for fishing and boating on Turtle Cove and Eastchester Bay. The 250-acre New York Botanical Gardens is in the heart of Bronx Park, which also hosts wildlife exhibits at the Bronx Zoo. The Bronx also has recreation areas on the Hudson River, including Inwood Hill Park and Riverdale Park.
- Bronx locals and visitors have access to exhibits at several museums throughout the borough. The Derfner Judaica Museum is in western Bronx's Riverdale neighborhood, less than a mile from the Hudson River. This museum features more than 800 pieces of Hebrew-influenced art and crafts, and admission is free. The 18th century Van Cortlandt House Museum, in the heart of Van Cortlandt Park, is open to the public throughout the year. This house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features antique furniture and art pieces.
- Throughout the year, the Bronx hosts events and festivals throughout the borough. During the summer, the Bronx River Festival occurs at River Park, overlooking the Hudson River. This festival, hosted by the Bronx River Alliance, features live rock music entertainment, canoe rides and food vendors. The Bronx International Film Festival also occurs annually in the summer and offers opportunities to view feature-length and short films produced by local and international filmmakers.
