Wick Replacement Directions for a Kerosene Heater
- 1). Locate the correct replacement wick for the specific model of heater needing repair. These wicks often come in pairs, complete with installation instructions and diagrams. It is always a good idea to have a few spares on hand in case your wick becomes damaged or inoperable while you are depending on the heater for warmth.
- 2). Use the kerosene heater with its existing wick until it runs out of fuel completely. Allow the heater to cool to room temperature before attempting to replace the wick or performing other service operations.
- 3). Remove any batteries to disable the ignition of the heater. The battery compartment often is located beneath a removable side panel held in place with Phillips-head screws. Turn the screws counterclockwise to remove them. Remove the side panel.
- 4). Remove the faceplate of the heater where the wick control knob is located. The faceplate will either snap in place or be held in place with Phillips-head or hex screws. Remove the screws, then pull the faceplate away to gain access to the wick.
- 5). Remove the wing nuts that secure the wick adjuster assembly to the base of the heater. Pull the wick adjuster assembly free. If your heater also has an ignition unit that prevents the wick adjuster assembly from pulling free, remove the ignition unit by unscrewing the mounting screws that hold it in place.
- 6). Remove the old wick from the wick adjuster assembly by pulling it out from the top using pliers. Discard it in a safe manner, as it may still have fuel in it. Install the new wick exactly the way the old wick came out. Be sure the wick adjustment knob changes the length of the exposed wick and is working properly before reattaching the wick adjuster assembly.
- 7). Reassemble the heater by following the reverse order of disassembly instructions. Fill the heater with kerosene and allow the wick to soak up kerosene for at least 20 minutes before attempting to light the unit.
