George"s at the Cove Restaurant Review
George's at the Cove is one of the most iconic restaurants in San Diego. For decades, San Diegans have been using the backdrop of George's comfortably sumptuous atmosphere and delectable cuisine to commemorate special occasions. If you haven't been yet, it's prime time to make a reservation and check it out.
George's at the Cove is situated right on the rim of the La Jolla Cove.
As a result of its location, the restaurant has incredible ocean views. George’s at the Cove’s Executive Chef, Trey Foshee, is an award-winning chef who was classically trained at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. He has been at George’s at the Cove since 1999 and believes in using fresh, local ingredients to create California-inspired cuisine.
George's at the Cove is broken into three different dining areas:
California Modern: This is the gourmet section of George’s at the Cove and California Modern doesn't fail to impress. California Modern is an indoor section of George’s at the Cove and has white tablecloths, comfortable chairs and couches and romantic subdued lighting. During the day, you’ll have ocean views thanks to the floor to ceiling windows facing the La Jolla Cove.
Eating at California Modern feels like a very San Diego affair as many of the items are locally grown and harvested and menu items change by the season. Appetizers include decadent seafood options like local spiny lobster, vegetarian delights such as local farm salads, or creative options like carrot-ricotta ravioli.
Entrees get even better; try one of the meat or fish dishes that come with inventive garnishes and dressings. In addition, there are always vegetarian options on the menu that can often be made vegan if desired. California Modern also offers an 8-course Chef’s Tasting Menu, an ideal choice for those with an adventurous palate who like to try a variety of spices and flavors during their meal. Wine pairings are available to order alongside the tasting menu.
Ocean Terrace: George’s at the Cove knows San Diegans love being outside so it offers ample space in the La Jolla breeze with its Ocean Terrace, a rooftop space overlooking the gorgeous scenery of the La Jolla Cove. Ocean Terrace serves up a gourmet bistro menu with stomach-pleasing items like garlic roasted shrimp, potato gnocchi and roasted pork shoulder. To dine on the Ocean Terrace, there is a $15 food minimum. If you’re not planning on eating much, then sit at one of the seats at the bar.
George's Bar: Simply want the George's at the Cove ambiance and a stiff drink or laidback meal? Then head to George's Bar, which has indoor and balcony seating overlooking the water of the cove along with many televisions giving it a sophisticated sports bar feeling. The bar serves a variety of drinks, including house specialties. Try a drink that comes with one of George’s Bar’s house-infused vodkas or go for the 'Skinny Cocktail' if you want a guilt-free libation that still tastes yummy. George’s Bar also has an excellent wine list and ten beers on tap, including local craft beers like Stone and Green Flash. For food, George’s Bar offers the same menu that is served on the Ocean Terrace. George’s Bar also has daily specials and happy hour Monday through Friday between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. with an extended happy hour until close on Thursdays.
