How to Make an Earflap Hat
- 1). Cut two rectangles of fleece measuring 10 1/2-by-7 inches with the stretch along the shorter side.
- 2). Cut four squares of fleece measuring 3 1/2-by-3 1/2 inches. Round off the bottoms of the squares to form the earflap shape.
- 3). Pin the two rectangle pieces of fleece together with the right sides facing. Sew the two short ends of the rectangles together on the sewing machine using a medium-length straight stitch and a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Turn the tube you just made right side out so the stitches are on the inside.
- 4). Pin two of the earflap shapes together with the right sides facing. Sew along the edge leaving the flat side open. Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Repeat with the other two earflap shapes.
- 5). Turn up 2 inches of one edge of the tube formed by sewing the edges of the rectangles together. Turn the two earflaps right-side out and pin them in place just inside the turned up edge. They should be directly opposite each other on the hat to fit over the ears. Sew the bottom edge of the earflap to the hat with a medium-length straight stitch.
- 6). Turn the hat wrong side out again. Sew another line of stitches inside of the previous stitches 1 inch from the edge. This time sew three sides, leaving the bottom open and gently curve when you get close to the corners.
- 7). Turn the hat right side out again, flip up the edge and pull the earflaps down.
