Apply for Disability Compensation

• 1). Go to the Department of Veterans Affairs website and read the section about disability compensation. Those who apply for military disability are assigned a disability rating based on the severity of the disability as determined by a review of their medical records and a thorough medical exam. The rating process can take several months to more than a year from the time of application until compensation payments begin. The assigned rating determines how much the veteran is eligible for in monthly disability payments.
  
  
• 2). Determine eligibility. Any veteran who served under active duty is potentially eligible for disability compensation. The veteran must have an injury or disease that was received or contracted during service or a prior condition that was further aggravated during service. Proof of service is required. Make copies of service records (including Defense Department Form 214, which is issued when a member of the military leaves active duty) that prove service and time in a combat zone. The veteran must have been discharged under any status other than dishonorable in order to be eligible for disability compensation.
  
  
• 3). Complete the application process. Complete Form 21-526 that is available at the VA's website. The application for disability can be completed on paper or online. Make copies of the DD-214, marriage license, birth certificates of all dependents, medical records, and pharmacy records. Include thorough medical records from all physicians seen about the ailment as well as pharmacy records. Seek assistance from employees of the VA if needed.
