    Dementia

    • Dementia is characterized by frequent loss of memory, dramatic changes in mood, loss of enthusiasm for hobbies, family gatherings and spending time with friends, diminished language skills and poor judgement when performing everyday tasks.

Dementia may be caused by diseases such as Alzheimer's disease or may be brought on by a stroke, meningitis, severe head injury or other neurodegenerative disorder. Old and young people can experience dementia, although most people who suffer from dementia are of advanced age.

Eating a low-fat diet made up mostly of fruits and vegetables can reduce your chances of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease later in life.

Those who suffer from dementia may become anxious or depressed. Even though people who suffer from dementia may not know what is wrong, they are aware of mood swings, memory loss and language difficulties. This can lead to higher levels of anxiety, which can make the symptoms of dementia worse.

    Natural Remedies

    • Natural remedies used to reduce the effects of dementia are those associated with increasing memory function, motor skills and lowering stress levels. Ginkgo biloba, for example, is useful in protecting brain cells from further damage. This can stimulate memory and increase daily productivity. Ginkgo biloba has been shown to improve memory and recall skills.

Rosemary, when used in cooking and in tea, prevents free radicals from damaging cells in the brain. Free radicals are chemical compounds that rob proteins, lipids, DNA and other essential items in the body of their energy. Antioxidants found in garlic, onion, berries, nuts, grains and herbs are used to fight free radicals and eliminate them from the body.

Vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C and selenium help prevent damage to brain cells while encouraging new cell growth. Vitamins and minerals work in conjunction with antioxidants to reduce free radicals in the body.

    Medications for Dementia

    • Medications are also available for those who suffer from dementia. Common medications include Memantine, Donepezil, Galantamine and Rivastigmine. These medications are used to slow memory loss, restore mental function and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Other medications are available to help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. Consult your physician to determine the best medication for yourself or loved ones who have dementia.
