Cost of Water Going Up, Install a Rainwater Tank

With global warming on the rise and longer warmer summers, the cost of water is sure to rise and saving water in the home will soon become the norm.
Installing a rain water tank is one way that consumers can help preserve water resources in the face of possibly permanent water restrictions.
Installing a water tank near the house is usually recommended, roofs have a large surface area and the existing storm water down pipes are easily diverted to fill the rain tank.
The water collected can be used to supplement a home's mains water supply, however since it is not completely bug and pollutant free a filter that removes harmful bacteria is required, as is a back flow valve to prevent the tank water from entering the mains system.
It is most usual to use use tank water for flushing toilets, filling washing machines, and washing dishes.
Water tanks vary in size, color, shape, material and mounting, either above or below ground.
Generally a 5000 liter tank is enough for most small families, although in North America and Australia 20,000 liter tanks are also common.
Building consent may be need to install a larger tank.
Caring for rain water tanks isn't particularly onerous, the rarely need cleaning, but preventing insects, frogs, leaves, and other contaminants from entering the tank is considered necessary.
Gutters need screens, and down pipes should be sealed from roof to the point of entry into the tank.
The top of the tank also requires a filter which should be removable to allow cleaning.
Every autumn gutter screens should be cleaned to prevent blockages which would allow bacteria to develop.
In some countries, local government departments are actively encouraging homeowners to install rain water tanks and many provide rebates to homeowners.
As costs of water supply rise and summertime restrictions become more frequent, a rain water tank could save the household money and provide peace of mind.
