Zumba is a fitness program popularized by Beto Perez, which combines dance moves into routine exercise steps.
The program is currently utilized in aerobics classes and is instructor-led.
It is now currently in use in many fitness centers, gym facilities, community centers, health clubs and other meeting areas where people gather and perform exercises.
The Zumba instructors must undergo training before they can teach this in their classes.
The Zumba instructor workshop will provide a Zumba instructor certificate of completion and this leads to many job opportunities for them.
Beto Perez was a professional dancer, fitness trainer and aerobics teacher from Colombia.
He started the Zumba by chance when one day he went to class and found out he left the usual music he uses in class.
He resorted to the Latin music tapes recovered from his car and found out that the students loved it.
He called it "Rymbacize" and when he went to the US; joined forces with Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion; entrepreneurs who changed the program name to Zumba.
They began selling this in DVDs and trained instructors to teach the program.
Currently, there are now 20,000 Zumba instructors in 35 different countries, as sourced from the Dancen Yoga website.
The Zumba classes have a party-like atmosphere unlike other classes of its kind where the ambiance is serious and has an intense focus.
The instructors take the lead in allowing the students to the several dance step combination showing a variety of dancing styles like salsa, reggae, calypso, merengue and swing.
Coming from the original source, the Latin rhythms are the most common beats but any upbeat musical style can be used such as traditional exercise moves.
When the class has started, the students are motivated to be at ease, by allowing them to laugh, be funny or silly, enjoy themselves while doing their workout throughout the class period.
The Zumba workshops train the instructors not only to cover the different exercises, dance steps, and how to run a class, but also teach the participants about the history of Zumba, how to market themselves, and its services.
When the workshop is completed, everyone receives a certificate of completion which is good for a year, after which the instructor must take continuing education classes.
Some health clubs and fitness centers require their instructors to acquire additional training which include Group Fitness certification to be obtained from a national group; while the CPR and AED training can be taken from the local Red Cross chapters.
The Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) is offering online support to Zumba instructors by providing them with newsletters, support for advertising and marketing and continuing education.
The members will receive six DVDs and 12 CDs throughout the year that they can use in their classes.
They also have the chance to access online forums for extra support from colleagues, both in the local and national areas.
