How to Fertilize New Bermuda Sod
- 1). After installation of new Bermuda sod, follow a fertilization schedule. Take a soil sample to a local county extension office or professional to test fertility of soil. Bermuda requires higher levels of fertilizer compared to other turfs.
- 2). If you plant Bermuda in the growing season (April through August), apply a complete, slow-release fertilizer with high nitrogen like 16-4-8 at the rate specified on the directions. The three numbers refer to the percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
- 3). Make a second application about six to eight weeks later or as specified on fertilizer directions.
- 4). Make a third application six to eight weeks later.
- 5). Apply a "winterizer" fertilizer in late October to prevent cold weather damage in the winter months.
