How to Change a Vertical Water Filter on a Refrigerator

    • 1). Close the knob in the water-supply line connected to your refrigerator, twisting the knob to the right as far as it will turn. Some, but not all, refrigerator models shut off the water automatically when the filter is removed. Unless you are certain that your appliance works this way, don't take any chances: shut off the water at the valve.

    • 2). Open the refrigerator and freezer doors to locate the water filter. Many refrigerators hold the vertical filter in the upper right rear corner on the refrigerator side. The filter is a cylinder hanging from the interior top. If you do not find it, pull the appliance way from the wall to locate the filter in the water line on the rear of the appliance.

    • 3). Grab the filter with one hand and twist counterclockwise to release it. Hold a cup underneath to catch any dripping water.

    • 4). Insert the end of the new filter into the socket and twist clockwise until tight.

    • 5). Unscrew the water-valve knob in the water line.

    • 6). Hold a drinking glass to the refrigerator water dispenser, if you have one, to run 3 gallons of water through the system. Empty and refill the glass to flush out the lines. If you do not have a water dispenser, run the ice maker through a full cycle and dump out the ice or use it in a cooler.
