Developmental Activity Ideas for Young Infants
- Some age-appropriate toys can be introduced to an infant at a young age. Toys should have no small parts and should be made of material that won't break into small pieces easily. Toys should be colorful or be made of interesting shapes. Young children learn about the world through the senses. Often these toys end up in a young infant's mouth so make sure to keep the toys clean at all times. Pick infant toys with an interesting texture and shape.
- A young infant should be given tummy time every day. Babies can't lift the head if they have underdeveloped neck muscles. By placing the infant on his tummy on a clean floor, mat or clean blanket, the infant lifts his head and begins to develop neck muscles. Make sure to keep pets away from your baby during tummy time and to stay next to him. At around three months, your baby will be able to start rolling over and moving more.
- Classic baby games help with an infant's development by working on developing one of the five senses. Play Peekaboo by hiding your face with your hands, and saying "peekaboo." Uncover your face and your baby will usually smile or laugh. This teaches the baby to recognize faces. Work with your baby's sense of touch by playing This Little Piggy on the baby's toes. Wiggle each toe and repeat the "This Little Piggy" nursery rhyme.
- You can work on your baby's development with simple motions and activities. Work on your baby's sense of vision by making funny faces at your baby. Your baby will study your face intently and will react to the funny faces by laughing or smiling. Clap gently with your baby to develop your baby's sense of sound. Bring your hands together in front of the baby slowly and with purpose so you don't scare the child. Develop your child's sense of touch by tickling your baby. Make sure the baby is in a secure seat or crib and gently tickle the baby's sides and feet.
