Good Source of Carbohydrates
- Complex carbohydrates are converted into glucose at a slower rate than simple carbohydrates and keep a steady flow of energy pumping through the body. These include bran, wheat germ, barley, maize, buckwheat, cornmeal, whole-grain pasta, brown rice, potatoes, wholemeal breads, high-fiber cereals, corn, peas, beans and lentils.
- Some people try to lose weight by limiting or omitting carbohydrates, but no-carbs is no way to eat--especially long term. For lower carb diets include citrus fruits, strawberries, bananas, carrots, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and beans.
- Many granola, breakfast and energy bars are good sources of carbohydrates. The carbohydrate amount will be listed on the label. Also, popcorn is a good source of carbohydrates.
- Dried apricots and dates are high-carbohydrate foods. Honey is another rich source of carbohydrates.
- Low-fat dairy foods are another good source of carbohydrates. Low-fat yogurt, skim milk, 1- and 2-percent milk and whole milk yogurt are good choices.
- Bad carbohydrates are highly refined and processed foods that have little nutritional value. Most are high calorie and loaded with artificial sweeteners and preservatives such as cakes, cookies, white bread and rice, sweets, fruits drinks, soda, jams and candy.
