The First Communion is one of the ceremonies being done in a Catholic church. It also serves as a colloquial name for an individuals first notion about the sacrament of the Eucharist, also known as the Holy Communion from which Christians commemorate the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus Christ shared with his disciples before his arrest and eventual crucifixion. This rite also recalls the time when Jesus shared the bread to his disciples and pertained to it as his body while the wine represents his blood.

Traditionally, the First Communion in the Catholic Church is usually practiced when children reach the ages seven or eight. Having this event as the second of the Seven Sacraments, this is being given a great value of importance. Some Catholic schools in some communities even take care of organizing the event and coordinating with churches and priests to conduct the ceremony. Families also gather and celebrate the event where special clothing is also being worn. Boys usually wear white long-sleeved shirts as the color suggests purity. The same color applies to girls dresses which are being paired with veils or short white gloves.

For most parents, as this is regarded as a special event for the kids, children are also being given special gifts to make it memorable. Some find it hard to look for First Communion gift as this is not like giving gifts on baptismal or birthdays. Some suggests having religious gifts given to the kids to add a religious value to this practice. Great gift options may include rosaries, prayer books, or even bracelets and necklaces with a cross as a pendant. Gifts of cash are also common for some, as well as taking a photograph to commemorate the event.

The way people celebrate this particular event may vary depending on the country and community traditions. But no matter how it is being celebrated in different areas in the world, this still remains as one of the practices that are important in Catholic churches. This is also significant for the kids therefore; it must be celebrated as a memorable event for them.
