It is completely normal to experience brief periods of ringing in the ears after being around loud noise for a period of time, for example, after sitting through a noisy concert.
But the noise typically dissipates shortly after it appears.
When there is ringing in the ears which is persistent and continual, tinnitus might be present.
The technical definition for tinnitus is "the perception of sound within the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound.
" Tinnitus is not a disease but rather a symptom of another disorder.
Tinnitus that never goes away may be the result of hearing damage.
The severity of this damage ranges greatly from person to person and is fairly difficult to test.
The most common way of rating the severity of the ringing is through an audiometric test.
The scale for severity ranges from "slight" to "catastrophic.
" Causes of Tinnitus Before hearing damage is considered as a cause of ringing in the ears, a number of other possible causes must be excluded including:

• Wax in the ear--wax build-up over time can be very severe.
  Hearing loss or tinnitus can result from this occurrence.
  
• Foreign objects in the ear
• Allergies--tinnitus is fairly common with allergies and proper allergy testing should be done immediately if the ringing is accompanied by any other allergy symptom such as a runny nose, watery eyes, or itchy throat
• Fluid build up--if something is causing fluid to build-up and not properly drain in the inner ear or the Eustachian tubes, ringing may occur and become fairly intense

If hearing damage caused the tinnitus, it may be possible to detect when the damage occurred and if the damage was the result of another person or entity's negligence.
