A Bump in the Road of My Journey
Hit a small speed bump in the road of my fitness journey this week.
Caught the dreaded stomach flu! You know the one where your head feels like it will explode and so do your guts? Well I don't think I need to go into any details...
I resolve to not let this "bump" take me down a complete detour, though.
Instead, I've learned a few lessons from it: Lesson #1: Don't take sleep for granted! I tend to be one of those people who likes to stay up pretty late and "burn the candle at both ends.
" I've been called "night owl" more than once, even when I was younger.
But at this point in my life, I'm thinking that needs to change.
I know that I can get stuff done a lot faster when the kids are asleep, but is it really worth my health? I didn't get ANYTHING done while I was sick the last couple days, so how helpful was that? So what am I going to do about it? I'm going to do my best to get to bed no later than 10pm.
That gives me about an hour or two after the kids are in bed to finish up anything I didn't get a chance to do during the day.
And whatever is left, I'll just have to do the next day.
Lesson #2: Don't take my husband's help for granted! If you know me, you know that when I do something, I do it all the way.
Unfortunately, that goes for being sick, too.
And as all mothers know, the house usually becomes a junk heap in a matter of hours when the "maid" takes a break.
Well, I didn't have to experience this because my husband stepped up and took care of it.
He made the kids their meals and even helped keep the house livable.
Thank God for helpful husbands! So what am I going to do about it? I'm going to make sure I thank my hubby every time I see him helping, no matter how "small" it may seem.
'Cuz every little bit helps! Lesson #3: Don't sell my kids short! When it comes to housework, I've been known to try to do it all myself, thinking it will get done faster and better than if I have the kids do it.
I mean, how well, really, can a 5 year old sweep the kitchen floor? During this sickness, and actually during the end of my latest pregnancy as well, I had the pleasure of seeing my kids really pitch in and do a lot of the housework.
And they actually did it pretty well, considering their ages.
I have to admit, it wasn't their idea.
They had my husband's direction and guidance, but it got done.
And most of the time, they seemed to be enjoying it! So what am I going to do about it? I'm going to stop being so "anal" about how well a job gets done.
After all "practice makes perfect" right? I'm going to encourage and guide my children to do housework that they can handle for their age range: because it's good for them to learn how to take care of things and because it's good for them to learn to contribute to the family.
