Effect of Botox Injection on Depression in Chronic Migraine

Conclusions

In this study, we retrospectively assessed how onabot injections in chronic migraine patients with at least moderate depression would affect their depression PHQ9 scores. We evaluated 127 patients with PHQ9 scores of 10 or higher (at least moderate depression), in addition to 3 other Patient Reported Outcome measures (Headache intensity, Headache Impact Test [HIT6], Pain Disability Index [PDI], and European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions [EQ-5D]). Onabot injections, given following the FDA-approved PREEMPT protocol for CM, were associated with statistically significant changes in all of the evaluated PRO measures across multiple domains, including depression, headache intensity, pain disability, quality of life, and headache impact, after at least 2 injection cycles. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the potential benefits of onabot injections for the treatment of depression in chronic migraine patients.
