Check Out Club Med"s new $14 Million Redo

Epic Sunrises and a $14 Million Redo

Palm trees were flapping in the soft breeze and it was as if they were applauding nature’s triumphant beginning.

My first day as a guest at an all-inclusive resort started with an epic sunrise over the Caribbean Sea on the northeast tip of Mexico’s Yucata´n peninsula where Club Med Cancun sits on nearly two dozen private acres.

I’m watching from my balcony within the resort’s new waterfront complex located on the most secluded beach in Cancun.

The unobstructed panoramic view comes with a bright master bedroom, a separate children’s room, 1.5 or 2 baths and a personal terrace or balcony complete with an outdoor shower. The 60-room building, part of a $14 million renovation project, is customized for families with a contemporary condo-style design.

The direct access from my room to the calm, warm water made taking an early-morning swim easier than anything else I did during my stay. (Drinking unlimited champagne takes skill and resolve.)

Pioneers of All-Inclusive Resorts

Kayaking, windsurfing and sailing options are also just a few steps from the new family building, which is an ideal set-up for parents looking to bond and relax with their kids without the hassle of logistics or the risk of disappointing interactions with unknown vendors or tour operators.

The G.O.s, or Club Med’s staff of “gracious organizers,” are experts in everything from the above-mentioned water sports to flying trapeze, and they’re basically waiting for guests to go on adventure with them.

All you have to do is show up.

This is, in fact, the primary reason for Club Med’s continuous success. As pioneers of the all-inclusive resort concept more than 60 years ago, the company prides itself on covering every detail of the modern traveler’s vacation.

I haven’t put flippers on my feet since I was in the third grade nor did I think I’d ever do so again, but this changed when I heard that the crystal clear water surrounding the resort is home to the second largest coral reef system in the world. The Great Maya Reef, also called the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, extends for more than 600 miles along the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán all the way to Belize.

A friendly G.O. on duty at the snorkel HQ, a short walk from my room, helped me select my gear and walked me through the steps to becoming a master snorkeler. He graciously held back his laughter as I struggled to put my flippers on while wading through the shallow and rocky shoreline. (Just like a mermaid!)

A few minutes later though, there I was, swimming freely among some of the most beautiful tropical fish I’ve ever seen in the wild.

I followed a few around the reef for more than a half hour because they were breathtaking.

The feeling was innate and liberating, and most certainly not caused by a lack of oxygen to my splash-resistant snorkel. I’ve been to countless beaches where water activities are an option— I even live two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean— yet the process of renting equipment, coordinating with travel companions, and committing to a time always stood in the way.

There’s something to be said for visiting paradise via an all-inclusive resort. There are no major deterrents or complications when it comes to being active, trying new things, or simply eating. The food here is fine, in some cases great, though culinary-centric travelers should leave their “foodiegos” at the airport.

At a property like Club Med Cancun, named the best hotel for families in Cancun by top travel agents, parents and their children are top priority.

The new Petit Club Med, for kids as young as 2 - 3 years, complements the existing children’s programming on the property for ages 4 - 17. This addition gives parents the opportunity to enjoy downtime while their kids are entertained and cared for by childcare specialists.

However, as a member of a non-nuclear family, I didn’t feel as out of place as I do in, say, Orlando. Perhaps that’s because a staff member named Minerva was looking after my room and leaving delicious chocolates on my pillow at night. My grandmother’s name was Minerva and this day would’ve been her 98th birthday.

Beyond the beauty of this synchronicity, I can see myself returning to Club Med Cancun with friends for a relaxing holiday with zero pressure or responsibility.

I’d even take a bed in the kid’s room; it’s that nice.
