How to Root an Epic 4G

    • 1). Buy a new micro USB cable for this process. The one included with the Epic 4G is good for charging, but is not adequately shielded for data transmission and will cause errors during the rooting process.

    • 2). Download the USB drivers for your phone from Samsung's support website. Double-click the downloaded file to install the drivers on your computer. Download the Android Developer Kit, Java Software Development Kit and the Clockwork Mod One Click Root tool. Install the Java SDK by double-clicking the downloaded file and following the on-screen instructions. Do the same for the Android Developer Kit. Finally, right-click the ZIP file for the Clockwork Mod and choose "Extract" to unzip the folder.

    • 3). Click "Start" then type "Adb.exe" into the search box and press "Enter." Right click the result and choose "Open File Location." Click in the address bar of the folder to highlight the location and press "Ctrl+C" to copy it. Click "Start," type "cmd" and press "Enter." Type "cd" then a space, right-click, select "Paste" and press "Enter."

    • 4). Press the home button then press the list button on your phone. Tap "Settings" on the touch screen. Press "Applications," then "Development," and finally "USB Debugging." Plug your phone into your computer with a micro USB cable. Wait for the computer to recognize the phone.

    • 5). Type "adb devices" and press "Enter" on your computer. Your phone should be listed with its alphanumeric code and "SPH-D700." If your phone isn't listed, unplug it and re-install the Samsung USB drivers before continuing. Next, type "adb shell" and press "Enter." Type "remount rw" and press "Enter." Type "exit" and press "Enter." Type "exit" again and press "Enter." Close the command prompt window.

    • 6). Open the folder where you extracted the Clockwork Mod ZIP file. Double-click the "Run.BAT" file. Press any key to being running the script. Wait for the script to complete. During this time your phone will reboot. At the end of the script, press any key to exit.

    • 7). Unplug your phone from the computer. Hold the power button until the menu pops up, and then tap "Power Off." Wait for the phone to shut down completely. Press and hold the middle of the volume button, the camera button and the power button simultaneously. Hold all three buttons until the phone finishes booting into the Clockwork Mod boot-loader screen.

    • 8). Scroll up and down in the menu with the volume key. Make a selection with the camera button. Start by selecting "Backup and Restore," and then select "Backup." This will make a backup of your phone in its current state so you can undo any changes made. Wait for the backup to finish. Select "Finish and Reboot" to start your phone with root privileges.
