    • 1). Download and print a copy of the notary public application that is located on the Maryland secretary of state's website (see Resource).

    • 2). Complete the application by entering such information as your full legal name, address, employer name and address, employer's telephone number and references.

    • 3). Mail the form to the Maryland secretary of state's office. Include with the form a copy of your driver's license or other government-issued photo ID.

    • 4). Wait to receive a postcard notification from the secretary of state's office indicating that your commission has been approved. The postcard will instruct you to visit the clerk of the circuit court for your county to be sworn in.

    • 5). Visit the clerk of the circuit court within 30 days of receiving your postcard from the secretary of state. Failure to visit within this 30-day window will result in your commission being revoked. Submit $11 to the court clerk. This fee comprises a $10 commission fee and $1 registration fee. Recite and sign your oath of office as you are led to do so by the court clerk.

    • 6). Order a Maryland notary public seal of office from a company that sells notary supplies. As a requirement, your seal must include the words "notary public." It must include the name that appears on your commission, as well as the county you were appointed in. The seal must be one that leaves a raised impression or an ink impression on a document. Other seal types are not acceptable.
