Softball Equipment Guide: Choosing The Right Softball Equipment For You

102 28
So you want to play softball? While how well you play the game depends a lot on your dedication to practice, having a decent set of softball equipment can help give your game a much needed boost.

Im not talking about expensive equipment here. If youre a beginner, you dont really need expensive or customized equipment to get you started. What you need is something thats useful enough to fuel your interest in the game and help you enjoy playing softball.

If youre shopping for your softball equipment for the first time, Id like to share with you some quick tips on buying the right softball gear for you.

This guide is also great for coaches who want to buy softball gear for their team but dont know which types of equipment to buy.

Ready? Lets get started.

Choosing the Right Softball Bat

If youre going to buy a bat for yourself, you should choose a bat thats just about the same length as the distance from your heel to your waist.

As for the weight of the bat, I would recommend beginners to use lighter bats because it helps them train their swing first. Aside from that, lighter bats also help prevent injuries because theyre easier on the players shoulder.

Also, I strongly recommend that you try out different bats first before buying. That way, youll be able to find which bat is the one youre most comfortable in using.

However, if youre a coach, I suggest you get bats of different lengths and weights to cater to the different needs of your individual players. You want to make them use bats that are just right for their height and level of experience.

Choosing the Right Softball Glove

Just like bats, softball gloves come in different sizes. Choosing the right size for you depends on the position that you play. Outfielders, for example, would benefit from using wider gloves as it provides them with more area to catch the ball. Meanwhile, infielders need smaller gloves so that they can get the ball out of the glove quickly and throw it to a baseman.

In a team setting, you want to get your players the right gloves and in the right sizes. Look for specialty shops that can provide you with gloves that cater to particular positions on the field.

Other things such as the material used, choosing a particular type of webbing, and a closed back vs. an open one, is a matter of personal preference.

Again, for coaches, get your team something thats durable and that everyone can use while, of course, keeping your purchases within budget.

I also would recommend players to break in gloves first before using them in a game situation. That way, the player using the glove will feel comfortable using it and letting it fit into their hands just like, well, a glove.

I hope this short guide will help you in finding the right softball equipment for you or your team. Again, I dont recommend buying expensive gear when youre still beginning with the game.

If you play it long enough and decide that you want to play it in an elite level, then you should invest on a better, and usually more expensive, gear.
