    • 1). Obtain a copy of the "Alabama Driver License Manual." You can get a copy of this manual at the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles or online. Study the manual in order to learn Alabama motor vehicle laws.

    • 2). Enroll in and complete a driver's education program if you have not previously driven. Spend at least 30 hours practicing your driving skills over the six months that you have your learner's permit. Your driver's education program will provide these 30 hours; however, it is desirable to have another adult, such as a parent, go driving with you so you have more practice hours of driving.

    • 3). Schedule an appointment with the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles to take your written test and driver's test, referred to as a "Road Skills Test." You can schedule this test at the Alabama Public Safety website.

    • 4). Practice for your written and driver's tests. Download and take any available practice tests through your driver's education program or online resources.

    • 5). Attend your appointment with the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles. Wear your corrective lenses if you need them to drive. Bring your birth certificate, Social Security card and learner's permit.

    • 6). Take and pass the written test. Once you pass the written test, the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles will allow you to take the driver's test.

    • 7). Relax during the period between when you take your written test and your driver's test. Follow the directions the Alabama Department of Motor Vehicles personnel give you to begin your driver's test. You will be assigned an examiner to drive with you during your driver's test.

    • 8). Get in your insured, registered vehicle with your examiner. Buckle your seat belt and lock your car doors. Adjust your mirrors. Follow all instructions the examiner gives you. Follow the Alabama motor vehicle laws you learned during your driver's education course and from the "Alabama Driver License Manual."

    • 9). Wait patiently as the examiner finishes "grading" your driving exam. The examiner will quickly inform you whether you passed or failed the driver's test and will give you further instructions for acquiring your license or for retesting if you failed. You may also receive suggestions for improving your driving skills.
