Classifications of Psychokinesis

Introduction

In this article I plan to dissect what the term Psychokinesis actually means.  There has been numerous misconceptions about what psychokinesis is, and what it isn't.  I will be discussing the the macro aspect of psychokinesis.  I hope to be able to add some clarity to the situation and make things simpler and easier to comprehend from a beginners point of view.

What is Psychokinesis?

To understand what the term "Psychokinesis" is, I feel we should break that term into its two base words, psycho and kinesis.  For the sake of simplicity and making it easier for the innate to understand I wont give elaborate definitions of these words but instead, keep it sweet and simple.   The word "psycho" comes from the Greek word psyche, which means originating in or from the soul or mind.  The word kinesis is taken from the root word kinetic.  Kinetic means, relating to the motion of material bodies and the forces associated therewith.

With that being said, you can assimilate the words kinetic and kinesis to simply mean motion, movement, or the act of moving.  So in concluding what the term psychokinesis means, we can logically come to the assumption that by combining both previously stated definitions from its base words, psychokinesis means utilizing the mind/soul to cause change or  movement in matter.

The Different Classifications of Psychokinesis

All over the Internet and even in many books, you find people discussing different kinesis abilities.  From learning what the word psychokinesis means, you must ask yourself if there are really any "different" kinetic abilities.  I will list for you some of the most popular classifications or labels that people tend to pin on psychokinesis.

(The definitions used here are the most common definitions on the web that the beginner will likely come across and not my personal definition of the terms.)

*  Telekinesis (the ability to move objects with thought alone)

* Hydrokinesis (the ability to manipulate water)

* Cryokinesis (the ability to manipulate ice)

* Pyrokinesis (the ability to manipulate fire)

* Geokinesis (the ability to manipulate earth)

* Electrokinesis (the ability to manipulate electricity)

* Photokinesis (the ability to manipulate light)

* Magnokinesis (the ability to manipulate magnetic fields)

* Gyrokinesis (the ability to manipulate gravitational fields)

* Aerokinesis (the ability to manipulate air)

Now obviously these different classifications or labels on psychokinesis are very silly and unnecessary.  The definitions themselves when read contradict each other on a major scale.  Lets take a look at a few and examine them shall we, just to clear any misconception about why they are totally null and void.

First of all lets look at three of the most obvious ones, pyrokinesis, cryokinesis, and hydrokinesis.  Its stated that pyrokinesis is the ability to manipulate fire, cryokinesis is the ability to manipulate ice, and hydrokinesis is the ability to manipulate water.  First of all, are not fire and water both matter?  Also, isn't ice just frozen water?  Even though unnecessary, it would be more accurate to throw cryokinesis out the door and coin the term tempokinesis(ability to manipulate temperature.), and even then it wouldn't make much sense because when performing "pyrokinesis", you are in most cases raising the temperature of the object.  It would make the term pyrokinesis of no use.

I could go to further extremes to point out the errors and contradictions in the rest of the terms, but it would be rather pointless, and its only use would be to fill space in this article.

It Comes Down to This

It all comes down to the fact that when performing psychokinesis and its many labels or classifications, you are still essentially manipulating matter.  Fire(pyro), water(hydro), air(Aero), earth(Geo), gravity(Gyro), matter(Tele), electricity(Electro), magnetism(Magno), light(photo), these are all forms or states of matter at their core.  MATTER is what we are manipulating here.

The sole purpose behind all these classifications of psychokinesis is merely to distinguish between the effects produced.  Pyro denotes heat or fire, therefore when manipulating matter which contains the characteristics of fire, they note and coin that psychokinetic manipulation as pyrokinesis.

Conclusion

Essentially you can call it anything you want to, it doesn't really matter as long as you know what your talking about.  Labels and words merely point to ideas and concepts.  My alias Sylar is simply pointing to the person behind the name, the person who is writing this article.  The same applies to terms and labels such as telekinesis or pyrokinesis, which simply point to the effect that is produced.  I hope this article has cleared up many misconceptions that have been around and has helped the reader to come to a more complete understanding of this all.
