Armour Thyroid Shortage

ArmourThyroid shortage strikes again. In some cases of hypothyroidism it has taken many visits over many months to arrive at a satisfactory thyroid replacement plan. It is a great feeling for the patient to know that their symptoms will be controlled on their specific medication plan. It is upsetting to have to change prescriptions at this point in treatment because the medication is no longer available. Making matters worse is that it is difficult to explain why this Armour Thyroid Shortage has occurred and when, if ever, the medication will be available. The responsible pharmaceutical company has been elusive in providing answers to these questions and supplies with no guidance to prescribing physicians.

Armour Thyroid, as well as several dosage sizes of Nature-Thyroid and Westhroi is in short supply. Is the FDA cracking down on the drug? Even though Armour Thyroid and other medicines made from pig or cow thyroids have been used for more than a century, they're not approved by the FDA. According to FDA spokeswoman Sandy Walsh, the agency hasn't pulled the plug on natural thyroid drugs, but has "urged all companies who market unapproved medications, including thyroid products, to submit applications for approval." Walsh says she can't comment on what the FDA will do if companies don't comply. Forest Laboratories admits that there is a critical back-order of Armour Thyroid and they do not know when new supply will be available.  Forest is recommending that patients contact their physician for alternative treatments such as Synthroid.  Unfortunately, many patients simply can not handle taking Synthroid and need the natural desiccated thyroid product.  This leaves these patients with a significant health concern and major dilemma.

Story one

Samantha, Nurse Practitioner in New York reports on the effect the national shortage of desiccated thyroid products is having on health care in her area. My own experience is that the situation is getting worse here in Florida, as well. Nature Thyroid and Westhroid which we had hoped would replace Armour in this practice has also become unavailable. At this very minute our office administrator is calling every pharmacy and pharmaceutical mail order companies we have used, trying to locate a source of these products for this practice (8 endocrinologists who serve a large portion of South Florida). Switching people back to T4 because the desired desiccated thyroid medication is unavailable, seems unacceptable in the "best health care system in the world".

Story two

There is another set of conversation. This shortage is outrageous! I just found out about it last week when I went to fill my Rx and pharmacy only had 10 tablets left of my dose left in stock and said they didn't know when they'd get more. The staff and pharmacists offered no explanation as to why. My dr's office "claimed" they didn't know about it either. I was furious when I went online and found out that this has been going on for quite some time and no notices had been sent out to patients, including myself. This is outrageous that people have not been notified and don't find out until they can no longer get their meds.
At least dr's, pharmacies need to let their patients know about this so they have time to figure out a plan for future refills.
It is obvious to me that the FDA, conventional endocrinologists, drug companies, etc are behind this so people are forced to start using Synthroid and it's generic forms. It is a power and control tactic for those listed above to make some big bucks. Similar things have happened in other areas of natural medicine.Interesting that the medical community, etc advocate a healthy life style and preventive medicine while at the same time want and need sick people to keep people employed. A traditional Chinese medicine doctor considers themselves successful if their patient rarely comes to see them.

Story three

I started on Armour 1 week ago and already the difference is just unbelievable, I had hypothyroidism for 14 years and on thyroxine, anti depressants, and anxiety medication it came to a head 2 months ago when I really could not cope anymore, I had turned to alcohol to escape my feelings of helplessness, i seen maybe 10 different shrinks, my head is starting to get clearer everyday and i just feel so much better, While adjusting my dosage last year when I  switched to Synthroid to desiccated  thyroid, I used both Armour and Nature-Throid within a few months span, and I could not feel any difference between the two. I hope this is of reassurance to those changing now from Armour to Nature-Throid. I cannot understand why Forest Lab would change a formulation that they know works so well and patients fight to take in spite of all the opposition from conventional pharma-driven medicine and its brain-washed physicians…. I hope they fix this mess.
