Who Cares for Septic Tanks in Henry County?

If you live in any rural area in the country you are going to be dealing with septic tanks.  In Henry County, Georgia tanks are just part of the reality of living in beautiful country.  Caring for your entire septic system is not only required by law, it is good sense.

Out of Sight Doesn’t Mean There are no Problems –

The very nature of a septic system allows problems to develop without notice.  As long at the pipes don’t back up and you don’t find effluent on the basement floor you might be fooled into thinking your septic system is in perfect working order.

If you haven’t been carrying out the proper maintenance and pumping, then you might be in for a rude awakening.

Dampness is a Bad Sign –

If you start seeing wet areas either by the leach field or around the area of the tank, there is a problem developing underground.  Sometimes it is a fairly simple repair.

For example: if settling has tipped the distribution box causing an uneven distribution of wastewater.  This is easily repaired by resetting the box.  If, however the cause is cracked pipes caused by someone driving over the field, the repair is much more involved and costly.

Water around the tank can be something as simple as a blocked baffle or as complex as a cracked tank.  While concrete tanks are most likely to crack and steel ones are inclined to rusting, all tanks will be damaged if they are driven over or overly compacted within the soil.  Only a professional can determine just what kind of damage lurks under the surface.

The Hazards of Infrequent Pumping –

When times are tough it can be tempting to put off a septic pumping; it’s just not advisable.  An overfull tank won’t work well and will release the liquids too soon to let the bacteria in the tank complete their job.

The longer the tank is left un-pumped, the more likely it is that the solids will become too difficult to remove with regular pumping.  This means a much more expensive job when the system is unable to function any more.

Someone will have to enter the tank and unclog the tank manually, and believe me, that is much more expensive than maintaining a proper pumping schedule.  In a really bad situation you may need to replace part of all of your system.

Doing the Job Right –

Your best bet for finding a good, reliable septic company begins with the neighbors.  Ask around and find out who they consider to do a good job.  Then, check with the County and the Better Business Bureau.

Your septic system will need regular maintenance, and no doubt, emergency service from time to time.  You may as well develop a good relationship with your septic service, because you will be working with them for as long as you own your home.
