    • 1). Plug the RCA audio cables into the "Audio In" ports. This is done with an outside source that you want to record on the Sony Cassette Recorder (such as from a television or sound board).

    • 2). Connect RCA audio cables into the "Audio Out" ports on the rear of the Sony Cassette Recorder TC-X170. Plug the opposite ends of the cables into the "Audio In" ports on an audio receiver or surround-sound receiver.

    • 3). Insert a cassette tape into one of the two tape decks and press the "Play" and "Record" buttons to record content from the outside source. To play just a cassette tape, press down only the "Play" button.

    • 4). Adjust the audio settings with the control bars in the middle of the tape deck. There are three controls for each tape. One is bass, which controls the bass of the tape, the second is treble, which controls the high-pitch audio frequencies, and the other is the pan option, which controls how the audio plays out of the left and right speakers that are connected to the tape deck.
