The statisticians constantly report about our aging population growing steadily each year. Governments are struggling to plan for this change in this population demographic. The smart businesses of the world have long recognized the future needs of the elderly.

Mobility for the elderly is a number one priority we must strive to sustain in later life. Having to rely on others, family and friends to help the aged 'live' everyday life doesn't sit well for many folk. For over 15 years now the use of mobility scooters has given peoples independence back. Begin able to move efficient around home, still visiting the shopping mall, enjoying the outdoors by interacting with nature can all be made possible by acquiring a mobility scooter.

The below is a useful summary of the different types of scooters widely available in today's market.

1. 3 Wheeled Scooter - This model is particularly suited for indoor use. Most models provide for a very tight turning radius which allows movement in small condos, houses, or shopping isles. The 3 wheeled models are made with a low ground clearance making them easy to access. The models are very light weight and easily disassembled to fit in a regular sized vehicle.

This model does have a few disadvantages, being its inability to cope with a heavier person, the stability factor and its ability to perform well on the uneven outdoor surfaces. Battery size is typically on the small side with 1 charge getting 15km in distance.

2. 4 Wheeled Scooter - This model is terrific for the folk who require mobility mainly in the outdoor environment. The 4 wheels provide excellent stability on uneven surfaces. The 4 wheel models have a higher top speed than their 3 wheeled cousins. These models although heavier can still easily be disassembled and placed in the car for transportation. People with large open living spaces will have zero problems utilizing the scooter indoors. Battery size is typically able to supply a distance of 40km in distance.

A few disadvantages of the 4 wheel model include their in ability to cope in small household space such as the kitchen and bathroom and the extra weight can cause some users problems when lifting the unit parts into a car.

3. 4 Wheel, Four wheel Drive - For those users who manage at home but require assistance when in the outdoor environment. Elderly people who love to take a 'long walk' or thrive on the 3 hour plus shopping trip, the heavy duty models are perfect. Being able to travel long distances at higher speeds makes these models popular for the outdoor setting. Many users will travel on the main road networks with the 4WD models.

Disadvantages for these models are only present if indoor use or limited outdoor use is required. Typically these models are never disassembled. Many users invest in small trailers to transport the scooter. Golf enthusiasts have these on order sometimes well before the legs give out!!!

Test drive different models, analyze which conditions are most required for the scooters use. Consider transportation needs. But don't put off purchasing a mobility scooter. Live a normal mobile life via Scooter use.
