How to Accept Donations Through PayPal
- 1
Sign Up and Log In
If you do not already have a PayPal account, visit the website to sign up for free. You will need to supply your e-mail address, which will be used to login to your account, as well as your personal information. This includes your first and last name, business or charitable organization (if applicable), and your address, phone number, and Social Security number. If you are setting up a donation fund for a charity, you will also need to provide proof of your charity's 501(c)(3) or Section 509(a) status, and you may also be asked to divulge your charity's exemption identification number.
After checking your e-mail to confirm the creation of your new account, you can then log in and start using your account. You will need to provide your (or your charity's) bank account information so that you can transfer donations from your PayPal account, and a credit card to verify your account to lift your account's monetary limitations. - 2
Create a New Donation Button
Once you have signed up and logged in, click on the "Merchant Services" tab. Here, you will find a section where you can create a new donation button. You can also use the link below to go directly to the donation button wizard:
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_merchant&nav=3
You can type in your organization or charity's name in the first box. If you are creating a button for a charity, and want to give donators your charity ID number, you can also include that here.
If you want to use the standard PayPal donation button, you do not need to make any changes with the button wizard. If you would rather upload your own custom donation button, or you want to customize other aspects of your donation button - such as what link donators are redirected to after donating - you can use the button wizard to do so. - 3
Choose the Donation Amount
There are two options you can choose for your donation button: a fixed amount, or a fill-in amount. A fixed amount means that you choose what amount of money can be donated by clicking the donation button; most donators would shy away from this option, and it can lose you a lot of smaller donations that you would have otherwise received. Instead, most people choose the fill-in amount option ("Donators enter their own contribution amount"), which allows each donator to specify the amount they want to donate. - 4
Create Your Button
When you are done customizing your button, click "Create Button." You will be redirected to a new page, where you will find the code for your PayPal donation button. To select the button code, click inside the code box and press "Control + A," then "Control + C." The code will then be copied to your clipboard. You can paste the code on your website, blog, or profile, wherever you want to the button to be displayed. Press "Control + V" to paste the code, and remember to save your changes.
Once your button has been added to your website or blog, donators can click the button and started contributing money to your cause any time they want. Donations will be deposited directly into your PayPal account - minus any applicable fees, if donations are made by credit card or check - and you can then transfer donations directly into the bank account you have on file with PayPal.
