How to Survive on Minimal Sleep With a Newborn
- 1). Do not reach for that jolt of caffeine. Caffeine is not a quick fix to survive on little or no sleep. In fact, drinking caffeine can result in feeling even more fatigued after the caffeine leaves your body.
- 2). Eat well and stay hydrated at all times. Good nutrition will aid you in maintaining good health. It will also help to keep colds and other common illnesses away even when you are not receiving enough restorative sleep.
- 3). Sleep or lay down to rest when the baby is sleeping even if it is the middle of the day or for small intervals at a time. Do not try to cram all your other chores into what little downtime you have available. Get some rest instead.
- 4). Stop trying to get everything done in one day. Taking care of your new baby will be more than enough in the first few days and weeks. Save your energy for the most urgent household tasks.
- 5). Ask for help or accept help that is offered. Allow your spouse or your children to give you a hand with household chores. Ask your husband to take turns getting up with the baby. Never refuse any reasonable help offered by friends and family in the first few weeks of your new baby’s life.
- 6). Ask your physician if you can return to your regular exercise routine once you feel as if you have recovered completely from giving birth. Exercising will give you more energy to help you through your long days.
