Hawaii Helicopter Safety
- While the Hawaiian helicopter tour industry has a good safety record, it is not perfect. As of 2007, statistics showed one individual dying in a helicopter crash for every 800,000 flights.
- In 1994, the FAA instituted a series of regulations for the Hawaiian air tour industry. In the years that followed, helicopter crashes decreased by 30 percent when compared to the 12 years prior to 1994.
- In 2010, the FAA announced it was preparing a new round of regulations that affect Hawaiian helicopter pilots. These include limiting the number of hours a pilot can fly, equipping helicopters with radio altimeters, and preflight risk-analysis programs.
