Capital Grants for the Developmentally Disabled
- The Department of Health and Human Services funds Developmental Disabilities Basic Support and Advocacy Grants. These awards are given to states to fund advocacy programs supporting protecting the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities. States also disburse funds to developmental disability agencies to coordinate activities and services for those with developmental disabilities to lead productive lives.
- Capital projects such as building facilities to house, teach and treat individuals with developmental disabilities in rural areas are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Community Facilities Grant Program awards funding to towns, districts and counties with fewer than 20,000 residents to construct, renovate and expand facilities used for public safety, community and health care purposes. Grants also cover equipment purchases necessary for facility operations.
- Neighborhood centers and public facilities are built and renovated for the developmentally disabled in urban areas using grants from the USDA. The Community Development Block Grants assists cities and counties with more than 50,000 residents and 200,000 residents, respectively, with grants for capital projects to improve the living conditions and increase economic development. Besides building and renovating nonresidential buildings, grants are used to purchase land and construct or rehabilitate residential buildings for the developmentally disabled. Grant amounts are determined by several factors, including the areas' population and poverty levels.
- Schools across the United States apply for grants to make necessary changes to its operations to accommodate developmentally disabled children. Public elementary and secondary schools received funding from the Department of Education through the Impact Aid program. Grants cover facility improvement projects and developing and implementing academic programs designed for kids with special needs or are disabled.
- Grants are available to build and modify homes and housing units for the developmentally disabled as well. The Department of Housing and Urban Development sponsors a couple of housing programs. The Supportive Housing for Persons with Disabilities program awards grants for financing building construction and modification projects and rental assistance programs for individuals who are disabled. The Neighborhood Stabilization Program also awards grants for land and building acquisitions and construction and renovation of residential homes that were foreclosed or abandoned.
- Capital grants are available to finance the construction of health care facilities and its operations to care for the developmentally disabled. For example, the Health Care and Other Facilities grant program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services. Grants are used to construct, renovate and modify health care facilities as well as purchase equipment. Another grant program is the Community Health Centers progam. The Department of Health and Human Services funds this program, which financially assists community health centers in underserved communities to improve its health care operation and providing the best care for area residents.
