6 Best Races in Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Half might sell out faster than most rock concerts (sold out in less than 7hrs!) and attracts over twenty-five thousand runners through the streets of Brooklyn. But if you aren’t one of the lucky runners who got into the race, there are a bunch of other Brooklyn races you can run that also show off Brooklyn's beautiful streets. From a Cinco de Mayo race to a beer themed 10K, there are plenty of opportunities to lace up your running shoes and make it through the finish line.
Brooklyn Half
How many half marathons throw a pre-race party? Runners can enjoy beer, listen to live music or grab a bite to eat from one the many artisanal Brooklyn based food vendors at this waterfront pre-party presented by New Balance. Last year the Brooklyn Half was the largest half marathon in the United States. This year the Airbnb Brooklyn Half will take runners through Prospect Park and the Coney Island Boardwalk. After they receive their finishers medal, runners can refuel on Nathan’s hotdogs as they relax on the beach during their post-race celebration.
Brooklyn Marathon
The fifth annual Brooklyn Marathon is on November 15th. The marathon takes place in scenic Prospect Park, where marathoners run loops of the park. The popular marathon, which has sold out ever year, attracts marathoners from all over the world.
Rock n Roll Brooklyn Half
After a few years as a 10k race, the famed Rock n Roll Marathon series has upgraded the Brooklyn course and is now a half marathon. I'll admit, I've run a bunch of half marathons (and a marathon!) and the Rock n Roll races have the coolest finisher's medals. The course takes you through Prospect Park and around the streets of Brooklyn. Stages are set up along the course, where local bands perform for the runners. After the race, there is a large post-race concert in the park. If you aren't visiting Brooklyn when the Rock n Roll Brooklyn Half is taking place on October 10th, check out the Rock n Roll marathon series, which hosts races around the world.
Cinco De Mayo 5K
The Mexican Athletic Club of New York is hosting the 18th Annual Cinco de Mayo 5K Run on Sunday, May 3rd. Bring the kids, because they also offer children’s races! Registration is now open online at Active.com through May 1st. The race is at 11AM in Bartel Pritchard Square in Prospect Park, Brooklyn.
The Tavern Cup 10K
Attention beer drinkers, on June 13th you can run along Brooklyn's shoreline and finish your race with a tasty brew. The self-declared “ultimate beer race” invites you to “run for yourself or for your favorite watering hole.” Post race festivities take place Yellow Hook Grill, a local Bay Ridge Pub. The starts on American Veterans Memorial Pier at 6901 Shore Road.
The Brooklyn Cyclones Take Your Base 5K
A great way to start your day in Coney Island, this 5K race also welcomes walkers. The race starts on Surf Avenue and ends at home plate. After the race, devour BBQ and beer at the post-race party. All participants get a free ticket to a Cyclones game.
