    • 1). Ferment the Pawpaw fruit for a few days by placing it in a vessel of water. This is to moisten the seeds inside as much as possible. Cut open the fruit and gently extract the seeds.

    • 2). Limit the seeds' exposure to air to prevent them from drying up.

    • 3). Place the seeds (along with some of the sphagnum soil) in the zip-close freezer bag. This will allow the seeds to hold their moisture.

    • 4). Place the bag in the vegetable chiller section of your refrigerator. Pawpaw seeds need to undergo stratification. This is a process where you keep the seeds really cold at a constant 32- to 40-degree-Fahrenheit range. This will usually be the temperature of the chiller section of your refrigerator. They should be in this state for up to 120 days. The minimum time for the stratification process is 90 days.

    • 5). Take the seeds out of the refrigerator bag. Some of them will have germinated. Transfer these to a moist pot of soil with good drainage and set it in filtered sunlight. Keep the soil moist at all times. Your seeds will have sufficient roots in seven weeks. In spring, transplant Pawpaw saplings with their soil. Do not try to remove the soil from the roots, as this could damage the roots. After their first two years, Pawpaw trees need strong sunlight.
