  Rabies shots are typically a requirement for any domestic animal. If you are a dog owner in the state of California, there are specific regulations that you must follow, not only for the health of your pet but for the safety of other animals. Rabies is a potentially life-threatening disease for animals and humans alike and is most commonly found in skunks or bats in the state of California. Once an animal is infected, it can transmit the disease by biting or penetrating the skin of another animal or a person.
  
  

Initial Vaccination

  Puppies in California should receive their initial rabies inoculation between the ages of 4 and 12 months. Puppies younger than that should be kept at home so they are not exposed to rabies or other canine illnesses or diseases. If your pet is on a regular health checkup schedule as recommended by most veterinarians, that first shot will be at 4 months. Puppies should not be any younger than 4 months, however. The vet may give other preventive shots at the same time as the rabies shot. Owners should receive a rabies tag for their pet and paperwork that shows the date the vaccine was administered.
  
  

Revaccination Requirements

  Once your dog has received an initial vaccination as a protection against rabies, a follow-up dose will be needed one year later. After the initial dose and first follow-up vaccine, dogs will only need to be vaccinated once every three years. This is a change from former California guidelines that required annual vaccinations. You should talk to your pet's veterinarian so that you fully understand the revaccination requirements.

  Your dog may also need to be licensed in your city or county. The tax collected from this license is available to help fund preventive and treatment efforts and quarantine orders to minimize the spread of rabies in populated areas of California, as needed.
