Samsung BD-P1200 Blu-ray Player with HQV Processing - Product Profile
Introduction - The Blu-ray Format:
The Blu-ray format is one of two competing high-definition DVD formats that is available to consumers (HD-DVD is the other format, which is backed by Toshiba). Sony is the main backer of Blu-ray, with Samsung being one of the partners. Both systems utilize new Blue Laser and video compression technology to achieve high definition video playback on the same size disc as a standard DVD.
The Samsung BD-P1200:
The BD-P1200 is the second generation Blu-ray format player from Samsung. The Samsung BD-P1200 plays Blu-ray discs at full 720p, 1080i, or 1080p resolution via its HDMI output. The BD-P1200 is also playback compatible with standard DVDs and most recordable DVD formats, as well as being able to playback standard music CDs and CD-Rs/RWs. Also, standard DVDs are upscaled via the HDMI output. The Samsung BD-P1200 also utilizes Silicon Optix HQV processing for enhanced image quality.
Video Playback Compatibility:
The Samsung BD-P1200 not only plays back Blu-ray discs (BD-Rom and BD-R/RE), but is playback compatible with standard DVD-Video, and several recordable DVD formats (DVD-R/-RW, and DVD-RAM). Via the Samsung BD-P1200's HDMI output, standard DVDs can be upscaled to match the 720p, 1080i, or 1080p native resolution of HDTV's, thus providing the best possible viewing experience from both Blu-ray Discs and standard DVDs.
Standard DVD playback is limited to the DVD region where the unit is purchased (Region 1 for Canada and the U.S.).
Blu-ray has Region Codes as well. The BD-P1200 conforms to Blu-ray Disc Region A.
Advanced Video Features:
Advanced video features of the BD-P1200 include: The Silicon Optix HQV Reon VX Video Processing Chip, as well as both 1080p/60 and 1080p/24 output options, and BD Java interactivity, for enhanced video performance and flexibility over previous Blu-ray Disc players.
Audio Playback Compatibility:
In addition to its video playback capabilities, the Samsung BD-P1200 can also playback standard CDs, audio CD-R/CD-RW, and MP3 Encoded CDs.
The Samsung BD-P1200 also features the new surround sound and two-channel audio processing formats: Dolby® Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, as well as standard Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1.
High Defintion Video Outputs:
High definition video outputs include: One HDMI (hi-def video and uncompressed digital audio), DVI-HDCP video output compatibility with adapter.
NOTE: Full 1080p resolution can only be accessed via the HDMI outputs, however, 720p and 1080i output resolutions for Blu-ray discs can also be accessed via the Component video outputs. For more information on what else you need to access 1080p resolution on your TV, check out my article 1080p and You
Standard Definition Video Outputs:
Standard definition video outputs include: Component Video (progressive or interlaced), S-Video, and standard composite video.
Audio outputs include: 5.1 channel analog (for access to the Samsung BD-P1000's built-in surround decoders), two channel analog, digital optical, and digital coaxial outputs.
Ethernet Port:
The Samsung BD-P1200 also features an Ethernet Port (LAN) for the purpose of downloading Firmware upgrades directly from the interent, without the need for a PC or waiting for a Firmware Upgrade disk to be mailed to the consumer.
Control Options
The Samsung BD-P1200 has easy control, via wireless remote control and onscreen menus, of the following parameters: Aspect ratio, 720p/1080i/1080p output selection, Resume Play, and any Disc navigation functions that are present - such as subtitles, audio preferences, interactive menu selections, BD-Java functions, etc...
Accessing High Definition Content:
Depending on how studios encode their discs, with regarding copy-protection, high definition output may only be accessible via the HDMI output.
However, if the disc does not contain the complete copy-protection scheme, it may allow high-definition 1080i or 1080p output. Whether consumers have access to high-definition output from an Blu-ray player via both the HDMI and Component Video outputs is determined by each studio on a case-by-case basis. Current Blu-ray Disc titles can be played at full 1080p via both Component and HDMI outputs. However, this could change over time at the discretion of the movie studios.
Final Take:
The Samsung BD-P1200 is the first second generation Blu-ray Disc player to hit the market, with Sony following shortly. Like most previous Blu-ray Disc players, the Samsung BD-P1200 is backwards compatible with standard DVDs, as well as most recordable DVD formats, and most audio CD formats, including CD-R/-RWs and MP3 encoded CDs. The Samsung BD-P1200 also incorporates a new digital audio format; Dolby Digital Plus, which expands the home theater audio experience.
However, despite all the benefits of Blu-ray and the capabilities of the Samsung BD-P1200, the decision as to whether to jump in now or wait and see what happens as the Blu-ray/HD-DVD war plays itself out, presents a real challenge to the average consumer. Although prices are coming down for Blu-ray Disc players, most players are still $599 and higher, while second generation HD-DVD players are starting at $399.
On the other hand, there are more Blu-ray Disc titles than HD-DVD titles available, and Blu-ray Disc sales have eclipse HD-DVD disc sales in recent months, despite an early lead for HD-DVD. This raises questions, such as software availability and format viability over the long term, is a real concern at this point. On the positive side, both Blu-ray and HD-DVD players are totally compatible with the standard DVD format, as well as CDs. However, if, down the road, your Blu-ray or HD-DVD player is no longer useful and the rival format is the only one left, you will not be able to play your Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs on the rival format's machine, unless you own a Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo player, only one of which is available currently: The LG BH100.
New tech toys are hard to resist, and if you are willing to take the plunge into high definition DVD, despite future uncertainty, then consider the Samsung BD-P1200 as a possible choice. One way to look at it is, instead of waiting, you can be enjoying true hi-definition DVD right how with the Samsung BD-P1200, especially if you have a large screen HDTV or HD-Compatible video projector.
