As anyone who has suffered from acne before knows, it is difficult to get rid of.
You may have tried different topical solutions, washing more frequently, or even gone all out and invested in expensive and invasive procedures like Accutane.
But according to a couple of studies done on the relationship between diet and acne, you may have been going about things all wrong.
Both studies conclude that there is a significant chance that a diet high in sugars will lead to worsened acne.
Study 1, conducted by a Neil Mann and his associates in the School of Applied Sciences at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, concludes the following: "The improvement in acne and insulin sensitivity after a low-glycemic-load diet suggests that nutrition-related lifestyle factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of acne.
However, further studies are needed to isolate the independent effects of weight loss and dietary intervention and to further elucidate the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms.
"
Results showed that for people who took in fewer sugars, they had greater insulin sensitivity which resulted in better hormonal balance, which in turn helped clear up their acne.
Of course, it should be kept in mind that this study only looked at males aged 15-25, and the effects of sugar on diet.
But it is rather conclusive that eating fewer sugars will positively affect acne, especially if you fall into this age group.
Study 2, conducted by Loren Cordain of Colorado State University, involved looking at 1,200 Kitavan islanders, 300 of whom were between in the prime acne age-range of 15-25, yet none of whom had a trace of acne.
The study details how their diet, which consists of fish, fruit and other unprocessed foods such as tubers, is completely absent of refined sugars and thus allows them to enjoy an acne-free lifestyle.
Of course, with the human body, nothing can be said with 100% certainty.
We are all unique in our own ways.
But it seems very conclusive that cutting out, or at least cutting back on, refined sugars will have a positive effect on your acne.
